SMALL CHINESE STEAMER SEIZED:
The Chinese steamer Shing On," on route from Canton to Swabue was pirated while passing Saching- how, about 12 miles from Sam panchow, and not a great distance from the Bocca Tigrls Forts. The pirates had come aboard at Canton disguised as passengers, and it is now known that the firearms with which they were armed woje brought aboard concealed in a basket of carambolas:
The capture of the vessel oc- curred about 11 o'clock on the 11th, and was affected with, only one casualty, one Chinese guard being shot down in cold blood becluse he had insisted on searching the passengers a number of times, Buspecting that some of them were in the possession of revolvers.
The ship was taken to Kian Island by its new masters, and there the Shing On was..met by u fishing junk and a steam launch. The first and second compradores and four of their staff, together with about 50 passengers, were taken off of the boat, and are now being held for ransom.
