While the minors in the respec tive districts are considering the proposal of the Miners' Federation conference to call out the safety mon from the pits, the latter them-2 selves are taking action.

A deputation of the Federation of Colliery Deputies and Firemen's Associations, "representing thirty thousand safety men,, has been re- ceived at. the Ministry of Labour and discussed the situation with, Sir A. Steel Maitland, to whom they submitted their position. The deputies refused unemploy ment benefit. during the stoppage.

Simultaneously the national executive of this federation met and urged that the time had come to reach a settlement. It is us derstood the federation adheres to its policy of advising the safety men to remain at work-Reuter.

The death is reported in Han- kow, from leart failure, of Mr. John Archibald, Jr., the managing director of the C. C. Post, at the age of 36. The end came almost unexpectedly, for though he had been ill for some time past his recovery was apparently assured.
