VERANDAH CRASH.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT IN KOWLOON.

Although still under construc tion, the verandahs of the top floors of a block of houses at tho function of Argyle Street and Re- clamation Street, collapsed yester day afternoon, apparently under the strain of a quantity of building material which had been left on the verandahs in preparation for the tiling of the roof.

The accident was attended with fatal results, one woman being. killed and a man and boy injured. A fourth managed to extricate himself unhurt. The injured were sent to the Kowloon Hospital for treatment, the dead body of the woman being taken to the Kowloon mortuary,

The block concerned, consisting. of three four storeyed Chinese tenement houses, was started some two years ago, but is just nearing completion, the contractor having ceased work i March last

Year. With the exception of the roofs of the three houses, all the work had been completed, and it appears that at the beginning of last year. when the contractor stopped work on the premises, a large quantity of tiles for the roofs, as well as sand and other bullding material was placed on the upper veran dahs in preparation for the roof- Ing.

were

Wenkened.

With almost two years' exposure to the air and rain, the building was weakened, although there no noticeable signs of any danger. The weight of the material on the upper verandahs is believed to have been the prim cause of the mishap.

were

Several of the contractor's work- men were still on the premises at the time despite the fact that work had ceased. Some were in the. front part of the building at the time of the collapse, and struck by the falling debris. Al- together four persons were burled by masonry, and of these an elder-! ly woman was later extricated by Aremen, but life was then ex- tinct.

Two others, a man and a boy f Bix, were

were rescued, while a sixteen year old Chinese youth managed to scramble out unaided. He was the only, one of the four, to escape without injury. The man was auf- foring from wounds to his body and face, while the little boy was only slightly injured..

It was reported to the rescuers that there was still another woman buried under the debris, but she was not found even after. some hours' work. In view of the dangerous condition of the walls. further efforts were abandoned while they were shored up. Later' excavation. however, failed to ro- veal the woman who was alleged to be missing.

THE RIVER RESUMPTION.

QUESTION OF NAVAL *PATROLS.

The Hongkong Chinese Chamber of Commerce held a meeting yea- terday afternoon, at which the most important item for discus- sion was the suggested renewal of the British anti-piracy naval patrol, in view of the resumption of shipping services to the Can- ton delta..

"The majority of Chinese mer- chants, it was announced, favour the renewal of this patrol system, and their suggestion is being sub- mitted by the Chamber to the pro- pet authorities.
