This danger has been discover- ed, after several tests in the city of Philadelphia, by four physicians who studied the blood of policemen who had been on duty for as long as eight hours at the important street interseo- tions of Philadelphia.
Doctors Elizabeth D. Wilson, Irene Gates and Hubley R. Owen of Philadelphia and Dr. Wilfred T. Dawson of Galveston, Tex., wore the investigators.
Thoy had noticed men on duty in the congested district roturn- ing to their precincts and com- plaining of symptoms that might bo due to carbon monoxide poisoning. These symptoms were headache, slight nausea and 'muscular weakness.
They took samples of the blood of 14 traffic officers, after their eight hours duty, and found as high as 30 per cent, carbon mo- noxide in the hemoglobin, or red corpuscles, of the blood."
"Investigation shows that the present street risk of carbon, mo-| noxide poisoning from eight hours: of constant exposurs is that up! to about 30 per cont of the ho- moglobin may be temporarily saturated with carbon monoxido, tao report reads.
At about 30 por cent, satura- tion very slight symptoms, such as slight increase of pulse rate," deeper broathing and slight palpitation became observable during rest and running upstairs was followed in about half a minute by dizziness, dimaces of vision and abnormally increased pulse rate.
By morning, however, the ro- port concludes, the poison is al- most entirely oliminated. But
the fear is expressed that this daily intake of carbon monoxide may pauso chronic poisoning..
