JAPANESE GETS FIVE YEARS.

The case was concluded yester day afternoon in which a Japan appeared before" the Chief Justico, Sir Henry Gollan, at the Criminal Sessions, to answer charges of importing the drug without a licence or Inwful authority, and with being in unlaw ful possession of it. The seizure was effected on the French mail steamer Angers on September 1st., and was found to amount to nearly, a quarter of a ton,

The case for the Crown was conducted by the Attorney General, Hon. Mr. J H. Kemp, K.C., whilst Mr.. H. G. Sheldon defended; The prisoner plended "not guilty" to both charges.

Defendant's Statement.

At the afternoon hearing, Mr. Sheldon submitted that there was no evidence to show the man in- tended to import the drug into the Colony. It had to be shown that he bad a guilty mind.

Giving evidence, the defendant said he was a tailor in Tokyo and wont to France in order to get the latest European models. He ar rived at Marseilles on July 6, and went to Paris where he met an-. other Japanese and a Chinese. On the invitation of the Chinese ho

ADMIRAL SIR R. H. HARRIS.

Admiral Sir Robert Hastings Harrie died on Aug. 25 at Yelvar

on, near Plymouth, at the age of 83. He had a sua career extend- ing over 52 years, onding in 1908. when he was retired on reaching the ago milt of 65. He saw service in every executive rank, and was actively concerned in the aval operations during the Cretan troubles of 1897, and during the South African War in 1899-1901, when he was Commander-in-Chief at the Cape. In the seventies he was in command of the gunboat Elk in China waters, and at one

period was Flag-Lieut. to Admiraf Sir Vosey Hamilton on the old Audacious,

A report has been made to the' Police of a highway robbery which was committed at Pak Sha Wan in the Tsun Wan district on Monday afternoon, the victim being the master of a fishing junk who had arrived in Hongkong from Shek Wan in the Chinese Territories to collect a debt.

In his statement to the Police the master said that he arrived in Hongkong from Shek Wan, Chin- ese Territories, on Sunday to col- lect a debt of $27.50 due to him 12 from a fish stall in the Central Market. Having received his money he passed the night in a shop in Des Voeux Road.

At 4 a.m, on Monday, he left to return to his boat but as there were no buses running at the time he arrived in Yaumati he decided to walk to Castle Peak where he to meet his wife had arranged with his boat.

When nearing Pak Sha Wan, early in the afternoon, two men and four, boys shouted from be- hind, requesting him to stop. He waited for the six persons, one of whom the master later found was armed with a chopper, the others being unarmed. The
