CANTON AND "THE BOYCOTT.
In an official communique issued by the Foreign Office" in Canton the statement is reiterated that ur- rangements have been made with the Strike Committee to terminate the anti-British boycott, No con- ditions are attached, in this latest notification; and "we therefore have a right to expect that the Canton Government will abide by its promise. It is true that Mr. Eugene Chen, in his recent letter to the British Consul, intimating the intention to call off the boy Gott, outlined the Government's scheme for imposing new import and export taxes, but, as we have previously pointed out, he did not make the one decision conditional on the other. It is, indeed, extremely doubtful whether the Canton Government would go the length of levying these new im- posts, for, as the Daily Telegraph states, such action would amount to a defiance of the Treaty Powers, which at the moment are scarcely in a mood to put up with further illegal acts.
