THREE MEN CHARGED YESTERDAY:
Three Chinese appeared before Mr. Justice Wood at the Driminal Sessions yesterday afternoon. -on s chargo" of piracy. Mr. A. Dyen Ball appeared to prosecute. Mr. C. G. Alabaster K. C. (instruc- ted by Deacons) appeared for firat prisoner, Mr. R. G. Sheldon (instructed by Johnson Stokes and Master) for the second and Mr. T. Addis (Instructed by Hast- Ings Donnys, and Bowley) for the third.
Mr. Dyer. Ball in opening the Caso said on May 20 at about 7 p.m. a fishing boat was fishing|| with a number of other boats near na Island called Lap Sap Mei, west of Cheung Chau. In it was the master, his wife and mother, his brother, a girl, a baby, and a boy of 16 years. The boat was) under way at the time when an- other, boat, belonging to the first prisoner went alongside and the first prisoner jumped on to the fishing bont with a chopper' in his hand. Ho struck down the mas-" ter and two other men then jump- ed on board, attacked the women and searched. their pockets and then without more ado threw them over the side into the goa.

The master of a fishing junk which was in the locality at the time gave evidence. He said he saw the first prisoner's boat pass him and go to the fishing boat which was pirated. Soon after- wards he heard cries of "ative life" and hurriedly left the locality. He recognised first prisoner's boat because of its white sails. He re- cognised all, three men as having been, on, baärd, although he Was about 100 fathoms away.

Questioned by His Lordship witness said he hurried from the scene because hekwas afraid. He ran because he heard cries of "ante life". (Laughter).
His Lordship: Why didn't you go to the Police? People of our class are frightened of those peo- ple. (Laughter).
Replying to the jury witness said he had known prisoners for some years.
A brother of this witness gave corroborative evidence and the case was adjourned until this morning,
