partly a question of faith," but I am convinced that there is a deeper side to the subject, name- ly, the confidence which is based on facts. For instance, the fact that we have an efficient brake on each of the four wheels of the car and that our foot will instinctively pass across to the proper pedal in an emergency cannot fail to add greatly to the feeling of security, and thereforo, reduce our nervousness, thus adding to the enjoyment of life generally and of motoring in particular.

THE VALUE OF CONFIDENCE. As a keen golfor, as well as one who is enthusiastic about road transport, I often find myself comparing the two pursuits in many different ways. I believe, for example, that the acquisition of rhythm in the golf swing helps one to drive a car woll and that skilful motor driving is of assist- ance in the playing of games. This point, however, calls for passing comment only in the present article. We have reached the stage when it is agreed that nerves in motoring may be over- come by the confidence based on certain facts, including our belief, or "faith," that we shall do the right thing at the right moment. I mean. by certain facts" the cultivation of the bostand quickest hand and foot move- ments. Knowledge that one's car is in a state of absolute efficiency, a. general foeling of power and control and that one is driving at

a speed suitable to the occasion,

all tend to reduce the nervous strain."

It is the emergency, however, that provides the real test, and the conditions are similar in the game of golf. It is in a testing stroke that herves affect us' most, ench as may occur in a close. match or at a critical stage of a medal competition. There are two points about this kind of nervousness which call for spocial |consideration." "Norves" can bo largely overcome by clear think. ing, as distinct from that very dangorous condition-mental con fusion, a.state of mind that is all too often the portion of the norvous motorist or golfer. The way to overcome it is by a process of self-training and a knowledge of what one is called upon to do. In golf there are certain main essentials, such as swinging steadily, looking at the ball, and following through, which are necessary to good play. If any of these are ignored or forgotten, good strokos may be come the exception rather than the rule. When in a tight corner, the fact of being nervous causes us to forget some of these | fundamental principles.

Tho remedy is, therefore, cloar-to make the essentials part of our regular habit, so that they will prédominate, even when playing under a atraini
