The late Dr. Allan was educated at Rugby, leaving which school he proceeded to Edinburgh, where he pursued his medical and surgical studies, gaining M.B. Jas. Ch.B.Ed. 1905, the Diploma of Tropical Medicine (University of Edinburgh). Later he held several appoint- ments, including those of House Surgeon and Outdoor Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, and Clinical Assistant and House Physician at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. He was a Momber of the Royal Society, Edinburgh, and the Royal Institute of Public Health.

Towards the end of 1908, the deceased gentleman was sent out to investigate beri-beriat Christ- mas Island, where that disease was causing hundreds of deaths among the coolic population. His work there, which occupied two years, was marked with great success, and when he presented his report, beri-bert, was practically stamped out, thanks to his untiring efforts.
