A private message states that the Nissen Kissen Kaisha steamer Taichi Maru, returning to Hankow after sailing for Ichung on Sep- tember 2, reported witnessing a protracted, battle near Hua Ching Kuing, fty miles up-river from. Hankow, between the British gun- boat Scarab and Southern troops after the latter had opened artillery fire from both banks of the river, the Scarab accepting and go-1 Ing into action with all her guns. The outcome is not disclosed."

The Taichi Maru was endanger- ed, and turned 'back, followed by

other steamers.
