At Manchester, Lancashire de- feated Hampshire by eight wickets and in view of Yorkshire's failure at the Oval, take the lead in the race for the County Championship. The details of the match follow:

Taunton, Aug. 24. The Australians declared to-day after making 229 (for four wic kets). Collins scored sixty and Ryder 40 not out. The crowd was small though the weather was glorious and the wicket good.
The spectators were treated to a wonderful display of batting. Somerset made a very sporting at- tempt to get the 302 runs neces- sary for victory in 220 minutes.
