SOME SLUGGING.

The Volunteer sluggers clouted Harrell and Cockey safely for twelve bits, and their fielders made fewer errors than the Hongkong Baseball Club, yet they lost the game by the margin of one run.

DEATH OF MISS GERTRUDE

"BELL: A SECOND LADY

HESTER STANHOPE.

:

Miss Gertrude Bell, Oriental secretary to the High Commission- er of Mesopotamia, died at Bag- dad on June 12. She had been alightly unwell, but gave no signs till the 11th of a serious indisposi- tion. She worked as usual and took her daily afternoon swim in the Tigris.

י

The newspapers, emphasize the great loss which Mesopotamia has Bustained in consequence of her rare knowledge and love of the Arab world.

Misa Gertrude L. Bell was one of the most astonishing women of the century. She was the daughter of Sir Hugh Bell, the ironmaater. Hunting, mountaineering, trävel, and poetry, were the passions of her life. Her knowledge of the peoples of Asia Minor, Syria, and Arabia was profound. The British Government showed its apprecia- tion of her powers by appointing her as political officer at Bagdad during the war.

She had unbounded Influence over the natives, and her title of Uncrowned Queen of Mesopota | mia" showod the respect in which

she was held,

They called her the mytery woman during-the--war-because- of her absence, often for months at a time, from " Bagdad. She usually returned after these ex- peditions with an important State secret.
