The point at issue is whether the circumstances surrounding the shooting justified the prisoner in firing shots from his revolver at a sampan, which he suspected was engaged in an unlawful purpose. One of the shots, it is alleged, killed a man on board.
Mr. Dyer Ball explained that the dead man and his brother, who were pig dealers, arrived in a junk in the Colony on June 18th, after which the dead man, his brother, and a third man went ashore, and obtained pig wash and two wonden troughs. The former was put in four kerosene tins, which were enfried by two men, one tin on each end of a bamboo pole. With the aid of two shop coolles, the stuff was taken to the Praya, where it was deposited on the edge of the wall, after which the two coolies returned to the shop.
A sampan was chartered to take the 'stuff to the dead man's junk, and after it had been stored on the sampan, the three men went to another boat which was tied to the Praya wall by the bows, the stern being towards the open har bour: They stepped from this boat to the sampan and pushed off with the idea of taking the stuff to feed the pigs with. During the trip out, the victim of the shooting was sitting in the stern of the sampan and the other two were under the hood.

The dead man's brother would ¦
say that after about a minute they heard a shot and then two or three more, and these were followed by whistles. After the second shot, he heard his brother, in the stern,

It is asserted that Marshal Sun Chuan-fungis working in full agreement with Marshal Wu Pei fu. The latter is concentrating on his campaign in the North and when that has been brought to a successful conclusion he will return to Hankow to superintend opera- tions against the Southern Reds" This is not meant merely for the subjugation of General Tang Seng chi, but Marshal We will institute campaign designed to oust the Reds from Canton. When that has been accomplished Marshal Wu will probably return to Paotingfa. Meanwhile, Marshal Wu does not intend to be drawn into Pek ing politics to any great extent.
According to officers of the ship, reports sont out.by various obser- vation stations just previous to the breaking of the typhoon indicated that the centre of the storm would pass to the west of the course on which she was steaming and, should this have been correct, there would have been little need for fear that the vessel would have been driven on to the rocks of one of the various islands to the west.
