nese as tho Yu Lien Hut, which takes place each year on the 15th of the 7th moon, toward the end of August of early in September, according to the western calendar. The festival is a religious one and is sometimes called the Chung Yuan Chich, the Spirits Festival. Chi- nese follower of the Buddhist re- ligion in every nook and corner of the country will observe the day with due rejoicings as the original idea is that, with the approach of the Spring (though, with the pre- sent heat, it is yet early to epeak of the Spring), all ancestral spírita. must be attended to and fed, o
Prior to the great day, the gentry. and elders of the various villages start financial campaigns for funds to meet expenses in connection with the festival. Already, numerous Shanghai residents have been ap proached and not a few foreigneré have contributed very generously. The contributor pays on the under- standing that the spirits of his an cestors or of these who are without. descendants will bless him for his generosity and for his mite. How Foreigners are affected the writer has been unable to ascertain. In cases where persona die without leaue, subscriptions are offered simply in the form of charity,
Lily Lanterns. Offerings on land are usually cash, payer "money," paper clothing and household utensils made of coloured paper. On the water, the offerings are. much. the same with the exception that the offering is accom- panied by a chain of lanterns which are known as lily lanterns," these being placed alongside the river banks.
When the Important day arrives, worshippers let off crackers and paper bombs and the ear is filled with the sound of heating of drums and clash of cymbals
It must be pointed out that the ceremony is purely a religious one,. and old established practice and custom in China, and the observa- tions are not, as many are apt to believe, to appeal to the heaven, tow suppress plague and to assist the hand of man in coping with choléra and other summer llnesses. In- stead of driving away the spirits, the people, showing a kind feeling by inviting them to their homes and hearts and supplying them with daily necessities for use in the next world.
The Festival of the Water Spirits is another sign of affection on the part of the water population for those who either perished in the water or whose remains were en trusted to the seas, without being cared for by relatives or descen- dante. In addition to the "neces sities" referred to above, the boat men will offer wine to the dead. The ceremony is simple. Seafarers or those who live on the water visit the shores or the river banks with candles, which they light, wine and paper clothing. etc, with which they make sacrificial offer-
A
- Apropos of the subscriptions offered, the Cantonese will contri- bute towards the funds of the San Yuan Kung Temple In Wuchang Rond and the Shanghel natives will offer their money, to their own temples in various parts of the Settlement.NMANNS
The Cantonese observe their core- monies some a couple of days be for the Shanghat people. The Shanghal people hold their services of the 15th of the 7th moon No doubt, the Cantonese, as usual, wil celebrate on a more sumptuous scale- than the Shanghai natives.
