FIRE ESCAPE MISHAP.

A WANCHAI INCIDENT.

A mishap occurred to a fire- escape engine last evening after it had been taken out for exercise and was returning to the central station..

In passing the Wanghai Police .Station the engine passtil over a trench covered over with planks, which were unable to withstand the heavy weight of the vehicle. and gave way.. The result was that the engine became stuck with one wheel in the air directly over the opening. After two hours work, the engine was extricated and was able to return to the station with very little damage,

PRINCE TO DELİVER ADDRESS.

The British Association for the Advancement of Science will open to-morrow its annual meet- | ing.

This year the meeting is being held at Oxford, and the Prince of Wales, who is President for the year, will deliver the Presi- dential address. It will therefore be one of the most notable gather- ings in the history of this great scientific body.
