The roport also shows that thereket dead. were two outbreaks of rinderpent during the year, one of them ospecially movere as it ran through the Chinese dairy herds and play ed havoc among them. It is sign ificant that no rinderpost has ofcurred since the strike and boy coti, troubles stariod. Cattle and other livestock are now prevented entirely from coming in from the West River districts. It would seem that the places on the river banks where stock are mustered prior to shipment for Hongkong are highly infected with rinder- pest, qnthrax, septicaemia haemor. rhagicia and other infectious dis.ly lower rates.

Dog's Home,
One hundred and ainety-four doga were detained during the year under observation for rabies. Of these 140 were returned to their owners, 19 tied in kennels at Kennedy town, 21 were destroyed by order of the Veterinary Surgeon or by consent of the owner, and fire were sent to the S.P.C.A. dogs' home.
During the year there wern five cases of rabies in doga. In commec- tion with this disease the Veterinary Surgeon calls attention to methods adopted for protection in Japan. He says:
Owing to a very bad outbreak of rabies in Japan. Umeno and Doi- carried out system of vaccination as a method to control the disease in dogs. After experimental work they concluded that it was possible to immunize dogs against rabies by means of ane subcutaneous injec tion of glycerinated fixed virus. which had been attenuated by the addition of Phenol, This method was put to a practical test and largo numbers of pet dogs in certain dis- tricts were given one dose of vac- cine.
There were 31,307 dogs vaccinated in Japan, of which number" there was only one case of vaccination loss, a one in which the vaccina- tion could not be regarded as effec-. tive enough; there were many cases of rabies among the unvaccinated dogs. It will be seen from the above that this prophylactic meag sure has been proved of the "great- ent value in combating the spread
of this disease among animals.
