SOME INTERESTING FIGURES.
Some interesting Items are con- tained in the report of Mr. N. E Smith, Hend of the Sanitary De partment, for the year 1925,
HAT-CATCHING,
In connection with the rat-catch- ing campaign, It is stated that 28 members of the cleansing staff were employed during the year setting traps, bird-lime boards and. Ynt-poison; also collecting rits from street rat-bins, private pre- mises, etc., and taking them to the Public Mortuary for examination. | A special campaign fh-March- Noyember was undertaken when rut-poison throughout urban districts. The total number of rats caught was: Hongkong, 74,500; Kowloon.. 32,403, Of these none were found: to be plague infected.

FOOD ANALYSIS.
Daring the year, 162 samples of fresh milk were submitted for analysis, of which 157 were found to pass the standard and five were below standard. Detalls are also given of other samples of various commodities, it being stated that prosecutions were taken in 17 cases where the samples failed to satisfy the legal requirements.
BIRTHS AND DEATHS.
With regard to death registration, it is stated that this, being a peces-, sary preliminary to burial, is almost universal but there is considerable ignorance of the law among Chinese as regards registering of births. As a proof of this it may be pointed out that the records of registered midwives show a total of 7,603 births, whereas only 3,654 births were actually registered during the rear. Feninle births in particolar ard frequently not registered. This is no doubt due to the presence of
a large fluctuating population com- pletely unaccustoined to the sys- tem.
