In the course of an interview with the West Australian Mr. H. S. Bickford, who had just return- ed from a voyage to Darwin, baid that in the Northern Territory, Australian-born Chinese are mak ing rapid progress in education, largely as a result of attendance at Chinese schools in the evening, and after State school hours, "In one Chinese school I saw suspend- ed from the ceiling a long streamer having large Chinese characters embroidered upon it. Asking for a translation of the inscription. I was told that it signified 'Advance Australia Your Country." 'None' the less many of these children are sent to China when 13 or 14 years old, where they remain for a year or two absorbing the cul- ture of their fathers."
