BRANDED BOY.

AMERICAN MISSIONARY'S

ACTION.

Tokyo, July 12. American Consul General Miller, of Seoul, has reported to the US. Embassy that the recent wave of indignation sweeping Korea is the result of the publication of a story that an American missionary branded the cheeks of a Korean boy thiod.

Mr. Millen verified the following, which was published by the Korean. papers:

Doctor Haysmiér, a Seventh Day Adventist medical missionary, con- nected with the mission at Ping. yang, caught a young boy stealing apples from his orebard. Ho summoned the lad's mother, three- tening to give the youth over to the police. The mother pleaded with the doctor, who then called a nurse to bring beld, with which ha painted the Korean word for thief on each cheek. This incident occurred in September, and was belleved to have been forgotten, when the boy was recently forced to quit school because of ridicule over his branded chocks. Then the story became public, and caused widespread indignation among the Koreans, whereupon the doctor reimbursed the boy's mother and also offered a public apology.

Notwithstanding the payment und apology, it is expected that, charges will be filed against the docter in the Korean prefectural courts.

The Japanese vernacular papers are now also expressing indigna- tion, and urging that Haysmier be expelled from the country. Renter.

FATAL SEQUEL TO QUARREL.

ALLEGED MURDER OF AN ABERDEEN WOMAN.

Domestic differences between man and wife, followed by quarrels and the ultimate death of the woman were described by Mr. T M. Hazelrigg, Assistant Crown. Solicitor. when he proscented at the Central Magistracy yesterday in the case in which a Chinese is charge with the murder of his wife at Aberdeen.

Outlining the case, he said that at the time of the crime the wo- man was living at 24, Wu Pak street, Aberdeen. The couple had been married about twenty. 'years, and there were six children!

The husband formerly worked as

a carpenter, but lately had been employed by his brother-in-law as a bricklayer. Until two years ago the family lived with the brother- in-law, but the wife, daughter and. 'three youngest sons then went o live in the house at Aberdeen, where they occupied the front

room, <

Family, Troubles.

From the time of this split in, the family, the husband did not ap pear to have supported his wifo. He had visited her on occasions, however, but there had been fre- quent quarrels.

The basis of the quarrels seemed to be that the husband thought his wife had been in love with his bro bher-in-law.

Then there had been the ques- tion of the disposal of the two youngest boys, The husband wanted them to be sold, but the wife did not agree to this course.

Another bone of contention was the betrothal of the older daughter, whose marriage had been arranged by the wife.

Chisel Found.

On June 21 other people living in the house were aroused by erics, and going into the front room" found the husband standing over his wife's bed. The woman had

a wound in her thront. The hus- band ran outside the louse, where he was held by neighbours until the police arrived. The woman died on the following day.

When the police searched the cubicle they found a chisel, minus a wooden handle, but with cloth wrapped round the kaft,

There appeared to be no motive except the quarrels, and so far as one could judge there had been no violént quarrel on the morning of the 21st,

امیر

In a statement to the police the defendant said that he had, quarrelled with his wife, but had not intended to kill her. 19Evidendo of various formal wit- nesses was called yesterday and the ease was adjourned.
