J, no more than anyone else who knows anything of Mrs. Besant's life of self-sacrifice and social re- form, would wish for, a moment to question her sincerity in this mat- ter or her implicit bellef that Krishnamurti 18 "the chosen vehicle" of a divine message.

But in the public interests, and in the interests, too, of the many good and devout Thesolophists in this country, I desire to recall somo facts that have been publish- ad in relation to the "World' Teacher who comes to the coun try under the responsible sponsor- ship of Mrs. Besant,

L

"Bishop's" Influence.“

Several years ago Mrs. Besant became the guardian of Krish- namurti (or Krishnaji) and his younger brother (since dead)." In 1912 the father of these two boys brought an action in the Madras High Court to annul Mrs. Besant's guardianship of his two sons, on the ground that they were under the evil influence of the so-called "Bishop" Leadbeater, against whom, in 1906, the British branch of the Theosophical Society made certain charges, an investigation into which resulted in his being called upon to resign his momber- ship.

Charges of a similar nature were again made against Leadbeater In connection with the Madras High Court proceedings. As to the course.and sequel of the trial. "Truth" stated the following in its issue of November 4 last:-

not

Mrs. Besant took the precau- tion before the trial of sending the two boys, whose evidence was, of course, material, out of India. In the absence of these yitnesses the judge found that the offence alleged was established, but added that, on his uwn admissions. Lead- beater held opinions which were "certainly immoral, and such as to unfit him to, be the tutor of boys, and rendered him a highly dangerous associate for child- ren."

Mrs, Besant, was necord- ingly ordered to bring the two boys back to India.

Preparing for 'Reincarnatión, In the same article from which I have quoted the above "Truth stated:-

One of these boys was the young man who is now intro- duced to the world by Mrs. Be "sant as the coming Messiah. For the last few years he has been under the tutelage of Leadbeater in Australia, osten- sibly undergoing the preparation for tho reincarnation of Krishna Christ in his person.

During that period fresh charges of immorality against Leadbeater wore Investigated by the Sydney police, with the re- sult that the precise details nec cessary for a successful prose- cution were found to be lacking, Judging from the evidence, the decision can only have been based on technicalities which can have very little bearing on the merits, or demerits, of the case, in view of Leadbeater's previous record, and the judg- ment of Mr. Justice Bakewell at Madras.
