SECRET PASSAGE,

SUPPOSED TO LEAD TO HAMPTON COURT PALACE

A subterranean passage of mediaeval origin has been disco- vored at Wey-bridge, Surrey, dur- ing development of the old Palace Gardens as a housing site..

A number of ancient furnaces have also been disclosed within the walls of old fruit gardens ad- joining the site on which the Royal Palace of Henry VII. once stood, and which are now covered by tennis courts.

At its eastern extremity the pas ange, which has been opened in two places, runs parallel with the wall of the old, garden, and ap- pears to pursue a northerly course in the direction of the not far dls- tant. Thames."

It has been conjectured that the passage may run on to Hampton Court, thus forming a connection between the two palaces. --

The larger of the two openinge made permits a view of a spaci ous cellar, blocked with a tout wall obviously of less ancient origin.

The entrances to both the callar and passage are surmounted by neatly chiselled arches, and the vaulted roof of the former gives. it à crypt-like appearance.

The brickwork is in a wonderful atate of preservation.

Stolen Jewels.

These discoveries have revived rumours concerning buried trea eure, the story being that jewels- belonging to one of Henry VIII's wives, Anne of Cleves, were atolon during her stay at the palace by a servant who, when the pursued, buried them on estate.

:

Oatlands Palace, as it was call- ed, was partly built of matterinis brought by water from the ruins of Chertsey Abbey, and in generi appearance probably resembled Hampton Court.

Elizabeth Queen

frequently stayed there, and the story is told of her keeper who, while hunting with her Majesty, leapt from his horse on to the back of a stag and plunged his sword into its neck.

James I also frequented the palace, and his Queen built her- self a silkworm room.

The buildings were demolished during the Commonwealth, and only a few fragments are visible to-day.
