CAPT. E. JONES' CAREER
From a resident of the Colony we have received some interesting particulars of the career of Cap tain Ebenezer Jones, who went Home on retirement by the s.s. Khyber on Saturday last. The writer says that very few peoplesitates absolute would imagine, when they met this quiet, kindly and unassuming old gentleman, that he had had one of. the most adventuréous careers that it is possible for anyone to have and still survive.
Captain Jones was born in 1855. in Aberystwyth, South Wales, and He rapidly went to sea in 1869.

THE LATEST CHANGES.
THE CHAMBER'S MEMBER.
MR. D. G. M. BERNARD SUCCEEDS MR. HOLYOAK,
A meeting of the Hongkong Gon oral Chamber of Commerce was held in the City Hall yesterday for the purpose of electing a member to represent the Chamber on tho Legislative Council in succession to the late Mr. P. H. Holyoak.
The Hon. Mr. D. G. M. Bernard was in the chair and members of Committee present were the Hon. Mr. A. O. Lang. Mr. Paul Lauder, Mr. A..S. D. Gousland, Mr. A. H. Burlow, Mr. J. A. Plummer, Mr. C. C. Knight and Mr. H. R. Cle- land (acting secretary)..
The Chairman said:
It is only some two months since we last met here to nominate a representative for the Legiala-" tive Council during the absence. on leave of the late Mr. P, H. Holy- oak. Little did we think at that time that we should have to meet again so soon to nominate a re- presentative for the full period of four years. This, however, be- came necessary through his sud- don death which occurred soon! after his arrival in England.
Mr. Holyoak's Service. Mr. Holyoak served the Cham- ber on the Legislative Council for a period of eleven years, during which time he never spared him- self in working for our interests and proved a most capable repre- sentative. He act an example which it will be hard indeed for his successor to emulate, and his death is a very great loss to the Chamber.
There is only one candidate to- day, and that is myself, proposed by Hon. Mr. Lang and accorded by Mr. Barlow. Voting will there- fore be by a show of hands.

Mr. Lang then proposed and Mr. Barlow seconded that the Hon.
