Que of the documents said that luck of definite information of the position in Ireland was having a detrimental effect on activity. in America, and was placing them in an awkward. position. The fact that De Valera had resigned 'the' presidency of the republic" was published in the Press three days before a cabla on the subject came to the envoy in America. The document proceeded

"Nothing in the nature of divi- sion or bad feeling has yet muni- fested itself here,, but there is a general feeling of apathy and in-. activity, and little or no money coming into the office.

"De Valera's personality means a lot in this country, and, while the majority of sympathisers and workers do not agree with his policy, 99 per cent. of them would not stand nasty things to be said of him."

Thompson Guns.

It went on to say that a call on the Oldn organisation. for 10,000 dollars (£2,000) to defray ox penses incurred In connection with Thompson guns kind of autom atic. rifle had been a serious handicap to getting much money for workers, for the time being. With the advent of the I. R. A. Into the organisation a little more money should be forthcoming in future.

Later, it was stated, negotia- tions for the purchase of Thomp son guns had broken down.

Evidence of finding documents on the accused having been given, he was sent for trial to Dublin, ball being refused.

DEADLY COCKTAILS,

SAME INGREDIENT AS ABSINTHE.

A sinister comparison between vermouth and absinthe, the drink. which has been forbidden in France, is drawn in the British Medical Journal.

Vermouth, which is the basis of allcocktails and the most popular drink among women in England at the present time, contains a large proportion of wormwood, the fatal ingredient of absinthe, which has a deleterious effect on the brain.

"Several of the plants. (used in making vermouth) contain princ!- ples which excite the cerebral ortext; and which cause epilep tiform convulsions when taken in sufficiently large dosen, just as camphor does.

"It is for this reason, that France has forbidden the drink absinthe, which is made largely from wormwood.”

In discussing the growing habit of cocktail drinking, the chief sur geon of a famous, London hospital said:

J

"For a long time the medical profession has been aware of the dangers of vermouth.

"Cases, of fever, which have often been wrongly diagnosed as influenza, have been nothing, less than the result of an over-indul- gence in vermouth. The presence. of wormwood and thujone makes it a highly dangerous drink, especially to those of a nervous temperament.

“Our chief' difficulty in making. it a forbidden beverage is that the proportions of these poisons which havo such an injurious effect on the brain are very small in com- parison with the proportions con- tained in absinthe...

"Nevertheless, the medical pro- fession la convinced that ver- mouth, taken in large quantities, contains a sufficient amount of harmful ingredients to cause serious illness.”
