CYCLING MATTERS.

MOTORING SUPPLEMENT. SATURDAY,

TO TINKER OR NOT?.

Thoro has boon some discus- sion amongst motor cyclists lato. ly on the matter of tinkering, " said being taken as to whether a motor cyclist of to-day should in- terfore with the "innards" of hig enging or not.

On the one sido we liavo 'don' clarations that the timo has come whon motor cycles have renched such a stage of efficiency in design and manufacture that they are practically. "fool proof," and that beyond the morost smattering of mechanical know- ledgo, beyond the mero ability to start, drive satisfactorily, and stop, there is no nood, for the rider to be a mochanic or oven mochanically minded.

Thoro is a cortain amount of truth in this. It is the, natural tendoney in all mechanical things, from, sewing machines upwards to be improved in do- sign your by year, until the time comas when" beyond ordinary attention in certain fundamental directions as in the providing of oil-the loss they are interfored with the butter. Pioneers in motor cycling took up the sport not only because of the pleasure to be derived from travel, but also because they had a natural bent towards things mechanical, and were interested in the machine as a muchine. Inciden- tally, hey had to be fairly pro- fictunt with tools, and had to possess no little knowledge of mechanics, for they never knew the moment when their abilities' would be called to the test. Rarely erg ifty miles covered without the necessity for some expert attention to the ongine or other part of the machine.

The same cannot be said of the modern motor cycle. Barring unusually untoward evouts, the motor cycle of to-day will carry) its owner inany hundreds of miles, thany thousands, in fact, with but the ordinary routine attention, and therefore it suoms to stand to reason that the loss "tinkering" there is the better, for "tinkering,

THE HOME WORKSHOP,

Hundreds of motor cyclists do not desire to spend more than they can possibly holp, and, therefore, if they possess any, mastory of the interior economy of their machines they are tempted

Is this safe? Is it a practice to he reconnonded in the case' of the average motor cyclist ?

I think the problem can be best sifted by considering the various classes of motor cyclists of to-. day: There are first the experts, the really knowledgeable men.. They can, of courso, be left to their own dovicos. Probably they have thoir own home work- shops, very likely containing a lathe, where they can do any thing short of making a machino. And at the other end of thescale there is the man who open- ly avows his ignorance. As long as he knows into which hole to put oil and into which hole to put patrol, and as long as his machine gives him a steady average of service he is content. He is likely to be a little bit frightened' of his machine when any atten tion is nooded. Ho is safe on this account, bedynŝo he is sure to take his troubles to a pro- fessional.

But the dangerous half-way between the expert and the unashamed ignoramus. With a little knowledge and the courago to "have a cut at " repairs, it is quito likely that he is not quito so proficient as he thinks he is."

MAKING MATTERS WORSE.

It may be that he has minde certain adjustments satisfactori- ly. Success tompts him to further attempts of a

moro optimistle character, and "it is "quito on the cards that ho makes matters worse instead" of botter, and has in the end to seek pro- fossiotial help.

This classification must not be taken as sharply defined. On the edges of this half-way class there are, of course, thousands of men who are quite capable of hand- ling many minor mattors thom- salves and handling thom suc. cessfully. But they know their limitations and are tempted into too deep waters. It is the man who wants " to`havo a qut at it " that "linkers" and runs" the
