The history of German finance from 1920 to 1924 was an object lesson for these principles.

Sir Josiah dealt also with the. difficulties of Italy, Austria, and Belgium, and said that when the French industrial reaction came, they would feel it too, but once past these breakers which were inevitable, clearer waters would be in sight.

EXCITING SCENE IN CORNWALL.

GALLANT RESCUE BY MISS QUILLER-COUCH.

The quaint little Cornish town of Fowey has just been the scene of a stirring incident in the vicinity of the dangerous rocks, partly sub- metged, outside its harbour. Three foreign sailors from a ves- sel which was being loaded with china clay the main Industry, of Fowey had gone for a sall, and soon after they had got beyond the shelter of the harbour and into a very troubled ses, found their small boat being driven towards the treacherous coast by the strong. easterly wind.

As soon as they realised their danger they hurriedly hauled down the gail and fook to the oars, and tried their utmost to regain the harbour, but could make no headway; and when their strength began to fail, the boat quickly. gained in impetus towards the rocks, and the fight seemed hope less when the men lost an oar.

Fortunately for

their them struggle was seen by Miss Ivy Qufiler-Couch, the daughter of Sir Arthur, and Lady Quiller-Couch, who knows the coast well. Miss Quiller-Couch saw that, unless help reached the sailors quickly, they would be cast on the rocks, and sho was soon speeding across the har bour in a motor-boat to the rescue.. Meanwhile, the plight of the sailors had been seen by others In Toway and in Polrunan, on the opposite side of the harbour, and Miss Quil- ler-Couch's dash to the rescue was watched with intense interest

She arrived In time, and by clever manipulation of the boat in the racing currants of a very heavy Bea, intercopted the other craft, and took it in tow. With great difficulty, owing to the danger of the foreigners' boat capsizing, it was brought into harbour with Ita three castaways.
