BOOTLEG BILLIONS.

DIVERSION OF INDUSTRIAL ALCOHOL.

Washington, D. C., April 7.-DE version of industrial alcohol alone furnishes an illicit liquor trafic in this country totalling $3,600,000,- 000 fn sales; Emory R: Buckner, United States district attorney at New York City, estimated to-day before the senate committee in- quiring into conditions, under sta- tutory prohibition.

This estimate started the com- mittee, and brought a gasp from the crowd which packed the hear ing room on the third day of the inquiry.

But Mr. Buckner did not stop there, adding $16,600,000 to the total as the value of the "cut" whisky which "booting druggists" in New York city alone put on the market.

Bootley "Cut" Figured. The district attorney arrived ut

tota!! his estimate by figuring a diversion of industrial alcohol to the bootleg trade of 60,000,000 gal lons a year. Bootleggers "cut" this three ways, he explained, pro ducing a Lotal of 720,000,000 quarts of illicit liquor.

"Placing the price at $5 a quart and that is conservative--this makes a total of $3,600,000,000,” he said.

"We pay $10 a quart out in my country remarked Senator Reed, democrat, Missouri, the one avow- ed wet on the committee.

"You ought to know," interject- ed Chairman Means as the crowd roared.

"I do," shot back Senator Reed Land another shout went up

Called as a witness by the wuts, who continued the presentation of their case at both morning, and night sessions, Mr, Buckner pic- tured an improvement in enforce ment conditionis. He paid tribute to Assistant Sceretary Andrews, of the treasury, who has charge of prohibition enforcement, declar- ing

"General Andrews is the best. thing that ever happened for pro- -hibition."

. Alcohol diversion has decreased, he said, since Andrews "took that situation by the throat" last Sep- ember. Taking the alcohol dis- illeries around New York, alons he estimated that General An- Trews' alcohol squad had reduced liversions to the point where the bootleg traffic had been lessened in the sum, total of $216,............. potential sales.-Exchange.

MAD RACE FOR WEALTHL Johannesburg, Apr. 2-Two thousand men, and boys took part in |

mad race for wealth to-day

in the biggest diamond rush in the history of South Africa. The scene of the discovery is at Swarkplaats Farm, near Venters dorp, and it holds promise of being one of the richest fields ever dis covered.

A year ago the farm was worib six shillings an acre: to-day the fortunes of the owner; two bro- thers, are made. Apart from the value of the diamonds, which am- cunts to £10,000 since the first dis- covery was made two months ago, they are making hundreds of pounds by selling water at haif- crown per barrel, and they are also entitled to a half-share of H- 'cence feer.

Sc- the veral fainted by reason of strenicusness of the task, but others, more enterprising, engaged professional runners, who' raced ahead and claimed the best ground. In the motley crowd, drawn from every sphere of life-bearded farmers, city men, labourers, and office boys-the most outstanding figure was a shingled girl in shorts and blouse, who raced on behalf of her aged father and won a good

A tin and canvas town, complete with shops and saloons, and con- taining some 10,000 souls, bau sprung up on the farm. The busi- est citizen in the town is the tin- smith, who is making pega marking out claims, while the se
