STAINLESS FITTINGS.

SAVING THE COST OF

POL

One of the reasons for the slow adoption of the use of stainless steel fittings is the cost of working up the material, especially in cases where patterns or designs are in tricate. Even in the case of simple patterns the cost is much higher than in the case of non- ferrous metals such as copper and brass, because the chrome. content which ensures the non-stain pro- perties makes the stainless steel or Iron or stainless nickel difficult to work. For motor-car work a good. deal of atainless. fron is now used, but where there is a big surface of material, such, as in tramcar and bus fittings, there has been re- luctance to embark upon the addi- tional expenture, which in the case of the fittings of a tramcar works out at about £100 more than if brasswork were used. Sheffeld Corporation has decided to ignore In the case of experimental fittings on tramcars the higher initial costs, and has given orders for cer- tain cars to be fitted with stainless iron uprights, stairway rails, drivers' wheels, &c., and the first car is almost complete for service. A good deal of interest is being taken in the experiment, which. quite properly is being carried out in Sheffield, where stainless steel, and stainless iron were invented. Stainless ron is not really iron, but a variant of stainless steel in its most ensily worked form. Those concerned in the experiment believe that gradually the new type of fitting will supplant the use of brasswork both on tramcara and buses. The change would mean s transfer of business from Birmin- ham, where the major part of the brass industry la carried on, to Sheffield, where nothing is being left undone by manufacturers of stainless steel to secure its adoption for all purposes where the tendency to tarnish has to be counteracted. Some tramway undertakings em ploy as many as 40 men for the polishing of brasswork heavy charge which the use of a stainless metal would render unnecessary.

An alteration has been made in the dates in respect to the con aignee notice of the M. S. Africa, These should now read as follows: Expiration of free storage, May -Blatz: examination of, damaged, cargo, May 29th, presentation of claims, June 2nd.
