It has been adopted definitely ag an engineering problem and has already resulted in the estab- lishment of a special graduate course in the southern branch of the University of California. This course has been begun under special endowment, and has been namod the Albert Russel Erskine Bureau for Street Traffic Re- search,'

At the head of this bureau té Professor Miller McClatock, noted traffic engineer, who was formerly connected with the Hur vard University Bureau for Muni- jcipal Research, is responsible for the model traffic ordinance newly adopted by Los Angeles and is now starting on a traffic survey of Chicago with the purpose of untangling that city's difficulties.

Fellowships are granted at the | University of California, designed to encourage research and a pro- {fessional interest in traffic en-} gineering. Cities are sought to offer their problems in traffe and} "suggestions are made for their

solution.

"The trafic problem is. an engi- neering problem," asserts Dr. Mc-1 Clintock, "and must be approached by the use of sound engineering! technique, instead of amateur political blundering, is is the case i in most cities."

Dr. McClintock sets forth. Log Angeles as the model city for) others to follow, with its original code of some 66 pages reduced to a simple, easily understood, code of 15 pages, which can be reduced further to about four pages of simple language.
