THE NEW WORLD-TYPE.
"CHAUFFEURS" AND "JOURNALISTS.”
Chauffeura and journalists are the two main types left triumphant in the post war struggle out of chaos, as seen by Count Kayserling in his new book "The World's Re- naissance" ("Die neueatstehenda Welt" Reich, Darmstadt), t
Both those terms are used in the widest sense. The chauffeur is the man Interested in mechanics of all sorts, as typical of this ago as the priest, the knight, or the squire has been typical of former ages. The Journalist is the spreader of all things new, both in the world of fintellect, who has completely superseded the philosphor whose volumes wore wri.ten in the study. Writing as a "atatesman-journal- ist," Count Keyserling argues that journalistic talent is nothing mediocre, as is shown by the fact that all great statesmen are skilled in the treatment of masses by that whoever can express the point in two words is always ahead of the Įman who requires paragraphs. Tha "superjournalist" who arises every

part throughout the cycles. Count Keyserling cites as cases in point the varying powers over other men's spirits of Christ, Lag-tao, Heracli tus and Nietzsche.
A Break in History:
Unity of purpose characterizes this new world in the course of construction. Everywhere a gan. eration is growing up more com pletely divided from the one pre coding it than during any former period of history.. Count Keyser ling sees the natives of Europe to- day united on three points. There are the war memories common to those now growing old or into tha prime of life; there is the im patience, just as universal, of tho", young who are suffering under the results of what they consider must be the folly of the former genera- tion; and there is the instinct of self-preservation common to all the peoples of Europe against the grow- ing power of America and the Orient.
Count Keyserling assumes that sons to-day are an improvement on their fathers. He draws this con- clusion from, the fact that a skilled". knowledge of technics, beginning with the most olementary wireless and an investigation of the paternal motor-enz, are as much the intel- lectual property of the boy of to- day as his tables were to hia father at the same ago. But im- patience of the traditions of this past generation is as much 3 characteristic as the new-won knowledge. This is shared by all people alike. This "chauffeur mass- type," which in Italy may take on the outward form of Fascismu, and in Russia of Bolshevism, is everywhere alike. The Asiatic ac- quiring civilization to-day starts with being a literal chauffeur his new altitude towards life, and may. become a danger, for the more primitive civilized man is, the greater the feeling control over a machine gives him. For Count Keyserling sees in what is called. for want of a better name, a talent for engineering, something very closely allied to the savage's talent for finding his way in strange ter- ritory by means. of his senses.
The Pan-European Idea, With youth everywhere looking ahead in the midst of technicat wonders accepted as everyday mat ters, the world's re-birth is attend- ed by no religious revival, for ali that is mysterious is rejected by.. these coldly matter-of-fact intel- lects. This is why, in Russia, steeped in Orthodox ritual, the change towards rationalism could be effected so quickly; why sailors and the mountain peoples, in closer, touch with the beauty and terror of Nature, keep their faith to-day and factory workers lose it.
