SHAKESPEARE
MEMORIAL THEATRE
LONDON SITE IN VIEW,
The Hon. Mrs. Alfred Lyttol, ton and Sir Johnston Forbes Robertson dammouted, recently, in interviews with a roprasonita- tive of The Observer, on some of the suggestions that have boon made for rebuilding the Shako apaaro Memorial Theatre Lab Stratford.
As Sir Israel Gollancz "had already done through the me- dium of The Tinies, both pointed out how impossible: it is to re- spond to. Bir Whitworth Wallis's appeal to the National Theatre Committee to abandon the pro ject of providing a National Theatro in London, and unito with Stratford in ordating a great National Shakespeare theatre on the banks of the Avon.
"There is no untagonismi whatever, "Mrs. Lyttelton said, "between tho Shakespearo Memorial National Theatro Committee in London and. the Shakespeare' Memorial Committee in Stratford. In fact, for four years the London Com- mitteo subsidised Stratford, and would probably still be doing so from the interest on their fund; but for the decision of the Charity Commissioners that this interest must be left to cumulate.
H
Answering those people who are so prone to point out that the National Thostre Committee have not achieved very much, she said.
"They have novor réalised our difficulties. Now, however, for the first time we have every re- ason to think that we shall be given a content-site in London. ao cha the moment we are not allowed to say where it is.
As soon as we receive this gift we shall use the money wo have on trust to build the theatro, and we shall make an appeal to the public for a fund to endow it. People might say that a site and a building should be sufficient endowment, but anyone who has studied the subject at all knows that you cannot run a big fa pertory thontra without an endowment.
The schemes for working this, National Theatre, when estab lished, have all been carefully planned. The theatre will be May 7. vested under Royal Charter in May 7.

other educational authorities will all be represented on it. No governing body, of course, could, manage the theatrical work; for that there would have to be a manager or producer.
"The whole idea of the scheme is that the work should be in the broadest sense educational. It would be a school for the best type of acting, and performances would be given free to school children and possibly to students, and the whole aim of the man- agement would be to give the public first-class work at very cheap prices.
"It is obvious that to have a flourishing organisation at Strat- ford and in London would be the best for both enterprises. One oan, see any amount of `ing' terchange possible between the two institutions. Of course the Memorial Theatre at Stratford must be rebuilt, and, though tho the insurance money will not be suffieint, I cannot believe there Letters
