The prestige of the fabric body has been lowered for several reasons. In the first place the poor quality of some of the makes

rapidly a shabby appearance, Secondly, some manufacturers went to the length of covering such parts as the radiator and the bonnet with fabric body caverlig, and heat and exposure indeed rapid wear 'out of keeping with the rate of deterioration experi-

dency to warp and distort hda been more pronounced in the case of closed fabric bodies than was at first thought likely. S another reason is that the fabric. panels do not provide sufficient protec- tion to passengers in cale, of accidents. Finally, fabric bodies were largely adopted in the first! place because their use largely allowed of dispensing with paint- ing and varnishing; but, in the meantime, rapid strides have been Įmade in developing finishes and their application. Mention might The made of the composite type of body that is at present popular in France. These bodies are built! of wood and metal up to a line Aparallel with the top of the bon- tet: The upper part of the body consists of an assembly of wooden and cast aluminium parts,

All-steel bodies, it has been found, stand the strain of travel) over badly-worn, roads more than any other kind of body. The harrow body pillarà permit of much better vision in closed cars than is the case where wood is. fused. A third advantage is the

resistance offered by the steel) punels in the event of accident, Perhaps the greatest advantage of all, however, is that all-steel bodies can be stamped out in sec- tions by means of huge presses at ja remarkably fast rate, whilst the sections can be built into a com- plete body, by welding in a very short space of time. Consequent- ly, the all-steel body is proving itself more comfortable, sufer, and cheaper than bodies of any other material that have yet been evolved.

The fitting of all-steel bodies is now practicable for moderate pro- ducers. This is made possible by developments whereby the cost of producing the necessary dies, has| been greatly reduced, fewer body parts are being made, whilst weld- ing methods have been improved. These advantages, together with the more economical production and fitting of upholstery and accelerated finishing processes, mean that comparatively small producers can install all-steel bodies quicker, and cheaper than has yet been possible. Dies can now be made in a quarter of the time that was possible a few years ago. The eight dies necessary for pressing qut the parts constitut- ing a all-steel boily would then have taken eight months to pre- pare: lo-day they can be fished in two months.

To-day an all-steel body can be put together in the short space of- 45 minates To give some idea of the speed with which the various operations are performed it is only acessary to atute that "fifteen minutes is a liberal allowance for completing the rear, toniteau assembly, and this oven includes | straightening and polishing. The putting together of the rear Louneau, is the most complicated sub-assembly in the whole opera- ion The final assembly-that is, the wolding and riveting of the various sub-assemblies sóm- | pleted in less then ten minutes. The testing of the body's contours, the hanging of doors, the fitting of the floor boards, and the general inspection of clearancos, tapped holes, &c., is performed in fifteen minates, Final Inspection occupies another dve mined.
