FORGED NOTES.
HIDDEN IN SEAT OF
TROUSERS.
The circumstances relating to the seizure of 131 forged Hong- kong and Shanghai bank ruota at the Macno steamboat wharf, were related before Major C. Willson at the Central Police Court this morning, whon a young Chinese boy was charged with possession.
The case had been called previ ously, and a remand was granted for further enquiries to bq, made.
Outlining the facts, Sergt. Mac- Donnid said on the 11th of April, at about 7. pm., the defendant landed from the Macao steamer Sal On and was stopped and
searched on the wharf. A small parcel of notes was found fixed; inside the seat of his trousers. and on being examined the notes, appeared to be forged.
Major Willson said what they would have to prove in a case of that description was that the de- fendant knew the notes to be for- ged. He asked whether Sergt. MacDonald was in a position to prove that.
Sergt. MacDonald replied the defendant had made a statement but it did not indicate that much.! He must have known the notor were not genuine, otherwise he would not have hidden them.
In reply to the charge, the do fendant said he did not know what was inside the parcel, as the notes were wrapped up in paper, and he was asked to carry them.
Evidence was given by a Chin ese detective, who stated he saw the defendant walking in a zip-za! fashion, and on being searched the notes were found,
Mr. D. B. Punt, as Istant it thr Hongkong and Shanghai Bank
examined the notes in the witnom box and pronounced them to be forgeries, He arrived at that conclusion, he saith, by reason of the fact that the printing was no so clear and defined
On : genuine note.
Further evidence was given by Sergt. Hill..
The Magistrate said he found the defendant guilty, but he would. postpone sentence until to-morrow He made an order for the destruc tion of the notes.
