Experiments Made.

Not long ago Dr. Miles made an experiment with typewriting, wherein he had five experienced secretaries who had been in the habit of using alcohol moderately take a set of tests over a period of several days. Some days the individuals were given alcohol, and on others they were denied the beverage. -

It was included in another "soft" beverage where its presence or absence could not be detected. Hence the controls were ignorant of whether they were drinking alcohol, and could not be con- scious through sight or taste of its presence in their bodies.

SIR H. BARKER ON

DOCTORS.

REPLY TO LORD DAWSON OF PENN.

SIT Herbert Barker, who re- turned to London from the Channel Islands recently

dis- cussed with Press representa- tive

the speech which Lord Dawson of Penn deliverd to members of both Houses of Parliament Dawson, it will, be remembered, devoted a good den? of his speech to the attitude of the medical profession towards osteopaths.

"I have read the report in the Press of Lord Dawson's spooch," said Sir Herbert Barker and was impressed by his tolerance, his obvious desire for impartiality and fair play, and his comprehen- sive grasp of his subject. Such a statement was in accordance with what I expected from eminent and able a member of

bis profession. I. profoundly ap preciate the kindly reference he made to manipulative surgery.

Lord Dawson said that he had never known a time when there was a stronger feeling against the modical profession, and evinc- ed surprise at the manifestation of this attitude. "To my mind the matter is not for a moment-to be wondered at. "It has all arisen out of the professional neglect, now generally admitted, of the practice of manipulative surgery, or bone-setting. Years ago Hutton, an early Victorian ex- ponent of this art, displayed a genius which no one to-day dare dony, and, as a recompense, was rojected and reviled by practically every medical man of his time, who vowed that this young inter- loper had nothing to teach them, and that he was merely a quack and a charlatan.

"For thirty-five years I have had to bear the full brunt of a fight for the recognition o
