CUTTING THROUGH THE WALL OF PEKING. The ancient wall which incircles Peking ie being cut open to construct a new gateway between the Tartar, and the Chinese sections of the city. Modern traffe has demanded this passage for a score of years, but por- sistent superstitious opposition by the citizens of the neighbourhood has until now prevented undertaking this sacrilegious work. The new gate is situated to the west of Chien Men, in a position corresponding to the well-known Water Gate at the east. The opening at this point will greatly aid the accessibility of the Liu Li Chang district, noted for its old porcelain shops and its annual jewel fair.
