INVESTIGATING.
HEAVY LOSS.
A Committee of four shareholders to investigate whether the business could be run more economically has been willingly appointed by the Directors of the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company, Limited, in consequence of a request by a number of shareholders.
The Company last year effered a loss of over 8450,000; which was met by calling on the Reserve Fund to the extent of half a million dollars, it was announced at the ordinary yearly meeting of shareholders held this morning. The scheme for the building of a new and bigger dock has been postponed for the time being.
Mr. Kelly Bayce, offered criticism of the expenditure of over $5,000,000 during a period of depression on what he described as unproductive buildings" and, replying, the Chairman pointed out that Mr. Sayce was one of the gentlemen who urged the Com- mittoo of Investigation, and suggested that until their report was received, there should be no talk of mismanagement.
