A BLESSED DISCOVERY,

In other words tobacco is a kind of "buffer" which mankind | has learned to set between him- self and cares and worries, which threaten to destroy his peace of mind. It is a "feather pillow" un which weariness and dis-! content may repose at,case.

From that point of view it is. without doubt, one of the most blessed discoveries ever made by humanity. For to be able to eat and rest with all the caro-free abandon of a schoolboy in the middle of anxious days, is to possess a power of the greatest and most remarkable value.

?

Tobacco enables men and women to endure the strain of civilisation. Thus, in a sense, it is one of the safeguards of modern life.

It is also one of the supports

of social intercourse. The man who does not smoke is always at a slight disadvantage as com. pared with the man who does.. Ho may, possibly, though I dis-i pute this keep a clearer head. He cannot maintain so kindly a disposition.

Those who inveigh against this habit are apt to overlook these obvious considerations. I must confess, however, that certain allments, and notably influenza, make smoking rather injurious while they last." A great many people suffer from giddy attacka if they try to smoke oven a cigarette while their tempera- turos are much below, or above normal.

WHEN NOT TO SMOKE.

I do not know how to account for this rather curious state of affairs. Apparently the poisone of some diseases act on the nervous system in such a manner as to render extremely sensitive to the influence of tobacco.

When these.poisons are pre- sent in the system, a single whiff" has the effect of half-a dozen pipes smoked in quick succession, and the well-known symptoms of tobacco poisoning quickly show themselves. The emoker grows faint and giddy, and may vomit.

It is of course, stupid to a do- gree to go on trying to smoke in auch circumstancos; and indeed, offorts to do this may result in collapse. The only wise course is to wait for that. to-morrow whon the poison of the diseano will have loft the system.

One of the very earliest signs of unfituess in my experience is excessive sensitiveness to tobacco.. This sign should serve as a war- ning and should send a man_to his doctor, or to the country for a rest.

If none of the earlier entrants succeed in completing the trials before April 30, the whole com- petition will elose finally on that date.

Rules of the prize demand that the helicopter must:

Go straight up and travel horizonally at 60 miles an hour. „

Be brought to a standstill in mid-air, and to hover for 30 minutes.

Alight without injury with its motive-power cut off.

All those onerous conditions it is claimed the row "hush-husb apparatus. would be able to ac complish without difficulty,

But this wonder-craft has come upon the scene just too late, and the £50,000 is now hoyond its in- ventor's reach.

Much speculation is being directed to the possibility of an attempt upon the prize by one of othor of the earlier entrants.

Exports in close touch with the situation do not think that any of them will be in a position to make a serious bid for the £50,000 in the time available.

Thus in all probability the Ministry will not be called upon to pay out this big award.

Changing the cigarette taste

of the world

I began in the United States-that overwhelming preference for "Turkish Blend" cigarettes-made of Turkish and American tobaccos blended. And wher ever the "Turkish Blend" has been intro- duced, men have instantly preferred it to any single tobacco smoked "straight."

For three years a "Turkish Blend," Chesterfield, has been the fastest-growing cigarette, over there in the homeland of tobacco. And because-smokers' desires are the same the world over, the same qualities of taste, fragrance, and delicacy of "balance" are steadily winning new friends for Chesterfield over here.
