RUINS FOUND UNDER THE SEA.

Submarine, investigations, have been carried out by the Hartman Deep Sea Expedition in the wa- Posilippo (near ters around

Naples), where large number

claimed by

of ancient ruins are known to lie at the bottom, of the sea.

These ruins are same scientists to be the remains of the ancient lost city of Paleo- polis, the rival of Naples.

Ever since the Roman historian Livy wrote his account of Paleo- polis, describing its slege in 328 B.C. by Rome, the question where it was actually located has never been settled satisfactorily.

Mr. R. T. Gunther, M.A. of Ox- ford, who spent years in carrying out careful investigations in the Gulf of Naples, located a great number of ruins, most of them in comparatively shallow water, and claimed that these were vestiges of Paleopolis.

Deep-Sea Photography.

Here the Hartman expedition recently concentrated its efforts.

A series of pictures were taken: Hartman's with Dr.

deep-sea cameras. Thus the ruins of many" ancient buildings described by Mr. Guhther were located and, hoté-|

taken of other ruins at a greater depth, the whole amounting to what seems to have been a large! city.

A series of formidable sub- merged structures trace the lines. of ancient harbours and break- waters. Narrow streets and broader avenues can still be fol- lowed, but where an early genera- on has its being, now only the fish play, and the octopus hides for his prey

Roman Villa at Sea Bed.. The data and films will be sifted and gompared and published in due time, with a descriptive ag coent, but it is certain that if Mr. Gunther did not actually discover: here the site of shelem Paleo- polis, he must at least have found an important accumulation of sub- merged buildings and ancient har bour works which would we des serve the name of a "submarine' eity."

At Cape Miseno a very remark- able objget under water awaits a It is an thorough investigation, Imperial Roman villa of great size, which is believed to have sudden- ly disappeared with all its trea- Aures below the sea as the level of the land dropped, or some other movement of the earth occurred, in ancient time. On account of the almost continuous stormy wea- ther however, the investigation of this interesting submerged palace! must be postponed until spring,, Search for Colossus of Rhodes.

After its work on the Italian sea const has been completed the Hartman Deep Sea Expedition will search for the Colossus of Rhodes, that wonder of the aneien; world. which disappeared Into the sen at the mouth of the harbour of Rhodes. The water at that point is deep and free of sand, so that! important fragments may still be fund and brought to light.

Simultaneously investigations will be carried out near Alexan- dria, in Egypt, near Carthage, 'and in the Gulf of Gabes, where the expedition will explore Tunisian waters.

Special attention' will also be paid to the life of deep-sea fish. One of the most remarkable crea- tures is the ordinary small oc- topus octopus vulgaris), which is very common along the coast of the Mediterranean. It is very

but! repulsive In appearance, shows an almost uncanny intellect] and instinct.

It will frat drop a stone into an open mussel or oyster, preventing

it from closing its sharp shell, bc-" fore inserting one of its tentacles

to suck out the soft parts.

Without this precaution the shell-fish would cut off the ten- tacle of the octopus. Before ent- ing its victims the octopus paraiy- ses them by means of a poisonous! liquid secreted in its salivary glands.
