FALSE PRETENCES.
IMPROPER USE OF
SANITARY FORMS.
+
A trick for obtaining money, which is becoming prevalent ini the Colony, was exposed this morning, when two Chinese were charged with obtaining $3.50 from an eating house at 137, Queen's Road, East, by false pretences. Inspector Spear said he had no evidence to offer against the second defendant, and he was dis- charged.
It appeared that the defendant, who is a lime washer, obtained a form which is sent out from the Sunitary Department, advising the occupants when to have their premises me-washed, and, filling It in, he had it served on the ter house. Later on, the defendant came round and asked them if they wanted any me-washing done.
Inspector Witchell said the form-used was not the usual' one that was sent to tea houses, and it had not been sent out by the Sanitary Department. The Secretary had charge of the forms, but he could not say off hand, whether it was possible for anyone to obtain one.
Asked where he got the form from, the defendant said he b tained it from the chief ofice.
On hearing this, Major, Will suggested to Inspector Witchell that he should look into the mat- ter, and the latter said he would.
Inspector Spear said they had received a number of complaints from the Sanitary Department about like offences, but this was the first time they had been able to get hold of an offender.
Defendant was sent to prison for six weeks, with hard labour,
. A SHIPPING SUBSIDY.
NEW YORK-SINGAPORE
LINE HELPED...
London, Feb. 10.
In the louse of Lords, Lord Parmoor drew attention ty the British subsidy under the Trade Facilities Act to the Silver Line and said that its ships were un doubtedly employed in the trade between Amerion and Singapore- and the Straits. There was very large carrying trade in four British lines between these points, besides Japanese ships and ships subsidized by the American Government, and at present there was more than was, necessary for shipping accommodation.
Lord Plymouth, replying, kuid that the Silver Line had, a loan of £1,107,000 of which the British Government had guaranteed the principal am interest. I was granted upon the condition that almost the whole proceeds were. utilized for the building of the necessary ships in the United Kingdom for service between New York and the Far East. The orders had been a great bom to ohipbuilding yards. He pointed out the divergence of shipping and the shipbuilding industry's interests, but the authorities whe had granted the guaranteḥ had carefully considered the effect thereof เพร shipping. The Government did not consider that these new ships were likely to in- terfere with British vessels.- Reuter,

Ci WHY ARE THESE
VALVES BETTER?”.
1. Because they are one piece forgings made of a new kind of steel the result of a new process, perfected to combine silicon with chromiunt steel) designed and fashioned by. experts. They will not burn, warp or break
in temperatures that quickly ruin other valves.
-Because they will outwear ordinary valves -four to one, and the average valve has to be reground 3 times as often.
3. Because this one piece, forgod-steel, non- burning valve is the latest and best type of valve known.
