Prince Chichibu said that dur ing his short study here he haď already learnt to know much of the charm of England. her scenery, her ancient buildings and her culture, and it was that knowledge which made him realize the valuable work which the Society could do in extending [the knowledge of Japan and Japanese art. literature and life. It was his sincere hope that the East and West might continue to learn much from each other, to the lasting advantage of both, and to the lasting peace of the world,

Lord Salisbury, after exprysing hia profound condolences with Japan on the great loss suffered by the death of Viscount Kator. alluded to the smoothness wit which diplomatic relations with Japan had invariably proceeded. The tendency was now' towards a combination of Powers. Locarno was an example of the effort to include in one great international agreement a very large number of Powers. The League of Na- tions was another example of the same great tendency towards universal agreement along the path of peace. ADMIRAL SIR ERNEST TROUBRIDGE.

A message from Biarritz says the death has occurred of 'Admiral. Sir Ernest Troubridge, from heart failure. Reuter.

Admiral Sir Ernest Thomas Troubridge, K. C. M. G.. C.B., M.V.O., was born эль the 15th July, 1862, a younger son of Colonel Sir Thomas Troubridge, the third Baronet. He was Naval Attache respectively at Vienna;. Madrid, and Tokyo, during the years 1901 to 1904; serving later as Captain and Chief of Staff in the Mediterranean (1907-8), and as Chief of the War Staff, Admiralty, 1911-12; commanding the Mediterranean Cruiser Squad- ron in 1912.

The late Admiral Troubridge". headed the British naval mission- to Serbia in 1915, and became. Admiral commanding on the. Danube in 1918. He was promot- ed full Admiral in 1919, going on the retired list two years later.. He served as president of the International Commission of the Danube from 1919 to 1924.

Among the late Admiral's many decorations were the Legion of Honour, Croix de Guerre (with palma), and the Grand Officer of the Rising Sun. He was. twice married, and leaves one son.)

London, Jan. 29. An appeal for 430 now men and women missionarles was made at the final sitting of the convention. of the Missionary Council of the | Church Assembly.

The Rev. Mr. Jenks, Aasiy tant Secretary of the Missionary i Council, said. Africa needed 129 men and 80 women; India 71, mostly men; China 60 'men and 48. women; Japan 18 men and 16: women: Korea six men; and Singapore six men and soven" women......
