12 A SMART MACKINTOSH.
Mackintoshes are worn by the smartest wonien nowadays, and in many cases are quite un- recognisable as such. Somothing startling and fashioned on very full lines is most in demand. There are some beautiful white rubber models, with collar, cuffs and binding of black kid and a lining of shaved guzelle, so that nobody need fear that they must shiver as a penalty for being dry. Kusha eloth also fashions thei most captivating linings.
All the enterprising rubberised silks, saunts and crepes are ini demand, but they must suggest nothing of the markintosh, and are very smart models. These are now adorned with cross bands of a contrasting colour or pad- ding and quilting to below the hemline. A beautiful model was made in rubllorised black satin. The chic little dravat was looped into a half low, and silvor kid fashioned binding and buitens.
Hais to match have met with Ao favour, since nothing can ival the little felts, but a novelty umbrella and big to match usual- ly find their place tucked under the arm for effect.
Louther coats fur trimmed are shown, and as an ideal wet-day outfit a leather skirt accompanies the coat.

THE LATEST IN HEAD-DRESSES.

Try on both of a pair of shoes or boots when deciding on Д purchase. It occasionally happens that while one fits there is u slight defect in the other.
If one posscasos a short dumpy foot; a long, pointed shoe conceals this fault, Provided cotton wool is firmly stuffed into the toe where the foot does not reach, and that they are kept on trees when not in wear, the shoes will rotain their shape and not betray the lines of the feet.
A long vamp makes the foot l look longer, a short one gives the impression of a high arch and short toen.
A high Louis heel set well under the shoe with high instop reduces the apparent size of the foot.
Rouliac, however, that par- ticularly striking shoes, in colour or shape, draw attention to the fact. Very desirable; of course, if they are neat and dainty, but a mistake if one happens to be flatfooted or fat-ankled.

SLIM ANKLES.
Professional dancers always have well-shaped legs and slim, dainty ankles, saya a writer in a ladice journal. I won't say that dancing has made their ankles slim and their legs shapely, for possibly these dainty, fairylike creature were born with beauti- fully-shaped limbs, but I will say that dancing keeps the ankles slim, espacially dancing that necessitates using the toes.
ABOUT MANICURING.
Never attempt to manicuro the nails, without first sonking them for at least five minutes in warm water to which a few drops of simple tincture of benzoin havo been added. The benzoin softons and porfumes the water and helps to whiten the nails.
Any trimming or filling re- quired should be done, before the nalik are soaked in the warm Water.
Lift the fingers out of the water, dry thom, then "with an orange stick dipped in the water gently raise the cuticle around the base of the nail. Unless this is quite loose before it is pressed back to show the half moun at the base of the nail the skin will; become ragged-looking and "hang nails, which are both ugly and painful, will resuit.
11
Never cut the cuticle. A drop of white vinegar applied on an orange stick around the cuticle will make cutting unnecessary, Cutting makes the cuticle grow herd and coarse, and if practised regularly will ruin the beauty of the nails.
After altending to the cuticle, which should be pressed back so that the little half moon is visible on each finger, dust the nails with polishing powder and rub with the polishing pad. '
At the moment there is a fancy : for outlining the edges of the nalla, with a very elight and de- licate line of rouge. This gives a very
attractive look to the fingers, but should only be adopt- ed by those whose nails are flawless. To draw unnecessary attention to a hand that is not perfectly kept is a mistake,
