ENJAMIN Frankdin as a sci- entist and as an inventar las been decried by experts as an amateur and a dabbler. For ex- ample, he took up the study of elec tricity in 1746 which he first saw Leyden jar, in the manipulation of which he became expert and which he intproved by the use of granulated rad in the place of water for the interior armatures.
A pote in his diary dated Novem- ber 7, 1749, shows that he had then conjectured that thunder and light- ning were electrical manifestations and in the same year be planned the

was on this house pictured above that Franklin first put up a lightning rod. For years the busi-
ess, of manufacturing lightning rods and installing them was domi nated by swindlers and the reputa tion of the lightning rod man be- came famous.
But Franklin gave
to posterity something worth while in lightning rods, and today they are comson in those sections of the country here lightning storms are frequent.

Generator Sparks at Brushes. Question:-The generator on my car has been charging rather unsteadily and upon taking off the cover around the brushes, I find that there is heavy sparking while the ongine is running. What cauzes this and how can it be stopped?
Answer-It may be only be cause the commulator and brush. ends are oily and dirty. Try cleaning the commutator by hold- ing a pad of cloth, slightly moistened with kerosene, against it with the generator running. Be sure that. the brushes are not worn way down and that their holders give spring pressure enough. Possibly the commu- tator surface is rough and needs sand-papering or that some of the mica bar insulation is high and causes the brushes to chatter, in which case have the commutator Lurned down and the mieus under- cut. If the commutator has a. burned spot between two bars, an armature lead has probably core unsoldered, A loose connection anywhere in the charging circuit may cause the voltage to rise enough to result in severo sparking.
