BIRDS AND BEASTIES 'GET A SHOCK.

A new danger arising from that mysterious thing which man calls electricity-has come into the lives of the birds and beasts particularly around London. And this peril will increase, as the electric railway spreads its ever- lengthening tentacles far and wide.

The danger arises, of coursa, when some furred or "faathored n.denizen of the woods and fielde, in trying to cross the line, sets one foot on the conductor-rail while another is on the ground or On one of the running rails. A fatal shook is the almost certain result.

The badger-whose stride. when he goos in search of food, is of the crooping and leisurely order has already on many oc- casione fallon viotim to this now merace. The fox has a hotter chance of escape because his habit is to move more quickly and often to jump obstacles that

io,in his path.

His mode of progression is more like that of the dog, though the dog has been caught more than once. In many cusés, how- ever,a dog has been seen to cross the live rail with impunity. But in at least one instance he re- ceived a shock, for he cried with pain. Yet his movements were so rupid that the impact with the n. current was slight,

Any bird that steps with one foot on to the conductor-rail while the other remains on the ground would be killed. That applies to the big birds-amali birds, because they invariably hop, both legs at once, are safe. I have seen whole rows of spar- rows and other small birds on the linc, many of them seated quite happily on the live rail itself. In that case there is no completion of the circuit, and they are safe,

There is no law to compel the railway companies to fence against anything except the larger domostic animals-includ- ing man. It is no concern of theirs should wild creatures be killed. Even should a pack of foxhounds get upon the line and every one of them be killed, it is. simply a case, in the words of Stephenson, of ";

"so much the worse for the coo." Ex.

FAR EAST AIR ROUTES.

London, Dec. 17.
