Experts estimate that the new [irrigated area will produce forty million pounds, weight of cotton yearly and will have an immense influence on the future prosperity of the Sudan. The dam les near Sennar, one hundred and seventy miles above Khartoum and two thousand miles from the mouth of the Nile, and has been constructed by the British firm of Messrs. S.. Pearson" and Son at cost of £12,500,000. The dam is two-
miles long and the water stored by it amounts, to one hundred ana forly thousand million gallons, a great lake Afty miles long having been created.
+
The possibility of irrigating the Gezira Plain was first realised by Sir William Garsten, when he visited the Sudan soon after its reconquest in 1898. It was Lord Kitchener who first fostered the dam scheme. Work was begun late in 1913, but the war interfered with its progress and it was not until 1920 that any great advance in construction work was made. In addition to the dam a new rail-. way line has been built from Mak- war to Kassala near the Abyssiniau -border. Cotton will be carried over this line and thence over an older line, to Port Sudan, a new outlet to the sea, whence" It will be shipped to London and Liver- pool-British Wireless.
