MOTOR CAR TRADE IN CHINA
WORLD'S PETROL CONSUMPTION.
20,000,000,000 GALLONS
A YEAR!
fr
(By Capt. E. de Normanville, in the Daily Chronicle,)
་
I do not know what the total
consumption of petrol is in the whole world of motoring; and I don't suppose anyone else does. But for what it is worth-not very much I fear I have been trying to compute it.
Obviously, the figure so arrived at can only be a wild computation.
I have, for example, assumed average annual mileage and miles por gallon, factors which can bo nothing more than probabilities.
Making all allowances for a wide margin of error, I have jestimated the yearly petrol con-- sumption for the world at some 20,000,000,000 gallons, and a prob- able annual growth at the rate of nearly 15 per cent.
We cannot really comprehend what this quantity means, but one' thing is definite: 'it cannot go on for ever.
When We Run Short. That fact is leading to some very interesting experiments, not only in this country, but also in America. The risk of running short of petrol has to be faced, though experts differ as to the probable date of the shortage.
Looking ahead to that date, experimenters are endeavouring to meet the situation by "doping" petrol, and designing a special engine to use the "boosted" fuel Already some astonishing results have been achieved.

In comparison with th size of China and its vast population, the motor car trade in China is still in an Infant stage and remains to be developed The cause is attributable to the paucity of roads sult. able for motor traffic But within the last few years, a movement. has been started to build good roads, which has caused a growing de- mand for motor cars, motor trucka and motor-cycles in many parts of the country.
The actual number of motor cars now in Ching, according to

Chinese taste at present seems to be for a medium grade car, suitable for decoration and ornamentation. This is apart from the demand for purely serviceable cars. In this regard the very cheapest are sought for. Cars are expected to last longer in China than in probably any other country.
