APOLOGY TO THE MACDONALDS.

MR. LLOYD GEORGE AND BATTLE OF CULLODEN.

The Clan Donald Society hav. ing challenged the accuracy of Mr. Lloyd George's remark in his speech at Elgin that the Battle of Culloden was lost through the defection of the Macdonalds, Mr. Lloyd George has now written to the secretary :~~~

course of an unprepared speech at Elgin should have given offence to your gallant Clan.

My recollection is that I rofer- red, by way of illustration, to the legond quoted in every history of the period, that a small section of the loft wing of the Highland army at Culloden declined to charge. I did not mention the Macdonald name.

I understood

that only a part of that important Clan took any sides in that his- toric struggle.

However, I express my unqua lified regret if you think my sea- tonces were so worded us to bear the interpretation you place u pon them.

There is no more sincere ad- mirer of Highland valour thun,-~ Yours sincerely,

D. LLOYD GEORGE.

Battleships which fought gal- Jantly at Jutland are to appear in a new, hut Hitting role, as training ships for "the Lion's Cahe."

The four battleships of the Iron Duke class, the Admiralty car nounce, are to be reduced from full commission and employed in training boys at sea.

They will be under the orders. of the Commander-in-Chief. Ac lantic Fleet, and will hand down the traditions of the Great War to our future Nelsons.

The present Rear-Admiral, Second Battle Squadron, will be transferred to H.M.S. Iron Duke, and will take command of the Third Battle Squadron, on its transfor to the Atlantic Fleet.

The four battleships, Benbow, Emperor of India, Iron Duke and Marlborough, were all built dur- ing 1912-14, and all were in action during the war.
