JUNCTION OF AMERICA

AND SCOTLAND.'

A theory that America and! Scotland wero - once joined to- gether by a bridge of land is ad-' vanced by three American Ación- tists who have just returned from a geological survey of the coasty of northern Europe.

Drв E. O. Ulrich, C. E. Rossor and R. M. Field made the survey. They came to the conclusion they did because a sharp difference was found between the fossils of) ancient marine animals found on) the Scottish coast and those: found on the coasts of England and central Europe.

Differences are also found in the fossils found on the north- eastern coast of Newfoundland and the southeastern coast of Nowfoundland. But the surpris- ing discovery made by the Am- erican scientists was that the fossils found on the Scottish coast and those found on the northeastern Newfoundland

coasts were identical.

Their conclusion, therefore was that a land bridge stretched from Scotland to Newfoundland, mak- ing it possible for marine life to spread from the one country to the other, north of the land bridge, but making it impossible for these creatures to get to the south at either the American or European end-of the bridge.

GELOLOGICAL DOUBT.

It romains to be seen how geologists in general will regard this new theory. It has been ac copted as a fact for a long time by most geologists that America) and Asia were once joined by a land bridge where the Behring' Straits flow between Sihoria and Alaska. This, however, is a very narrow body of water and not a part of the great ocean.

were

Most geologists are inclined to believe that the general distribu- tiens of land and ocean Jalways approximately as they are now though at times large portions of land sunk below ser- level and were flooded with shallow hudies of water flowing in from the oceans.

The theory of a land bridge be-- tween Scotland and Newfound- land, it would seem, runs counter to this belief.

There is a theory, howeyer, which has been advanced by some European geologists which would tend to fit in with the lund-bridge

DON-THE OLD TIME theory. It is one, though, which

American geologists have regard-1 ed with little enthusiasm.

This is the theory that the con- tinents have not been stationary upon the surface of the earth but that they constitute super-struc turos which have moved or slip- ped along the lower rock struc tured.

It is possible, upon the basis of this theory, that Newfoundland und Scotland may have been nuch closer to each other of one time than they are now.

DIABETES

CURED.

SUCCESS OF RECENT DISCOVERY.

Insulin, when first discovered. was regarded merely as a treat- ment and not as a cure for dia-i betes. That is, it was supposed that the patient would have to continuo indefinitely upon an insulin treatment.

This was because diabetos Te- sults from a diseased condition

But Dr. F. G. Bunting of Toronto, one of the discoverers of insulin, announces now that ho believes insulin may also act as
