THE SYRIAN SITUATION.

Damascus, December, G. Coincidently with the arrival of the Commissioner, M. De Jouvenol, bands operating around the city, reported to number 2,000 men, threatened an early attack.

The result was acute tension created by the order that no traffic be allowed in the streets after six o'clock lu the evening. All permits were withdrawn, and the troops standing by the barricades were increased.

New bands of brigands are forming, one recruited mainly from the Maldan quarter.

The authorities on December 1, summoned the notables of Maidan and instrueted them that their quarter must resist any attempt at entry by the bands, otherwise the authorities would bombard it.

THE LOCARNO TREATIES.

Berlin, December 6.

The Cabinet resigned on the return of Herr Luther and Herr Stresemann frum London, in accordance with its decision to do so after the signature to the Locarno Treaties, in order to permit of the formation of another, or the reconstruction of the present Cabiner, which is carrying on until the new government is formed.

The crisis is due to the earlier action of the Nationalists, in sud- denly deciding to oppose the Locarno Treaties, and the consequent withdrawal of three Nationalist Ministers from the Cabinet-Reuter.

PANAMA CANAL DEFENCES.

Washington, December 6. Mr. Dwight Davis, the Secretary of War, in his annual report to President Coolidge, deals mainly with the defences of the Panama Canal and urges that the security of the Canal should be assured with- out delay and that Amerift's western outpost on the island of Oahu should be placed on a basis to resist an attack of any probable magni- The tude made with the object of seizing the Hawaiian Islands, programme for the defence of the Canal and of Oahu should be com- pleted within ten years, beginning with the discal year 1927.--Reuter's American Service.

New York, December 6. Not since the days of the Gold Rush in 1849 has Amerien wit- nessed such a concerted flow of people into any State as is happen- ing now in Florida, where a great real estate boom is in full swing.

A hundred thousand tourists and settlers are putting up with the inconveniences and, hardships of camp life owing to the unparalleled housing shortage. Camps encircle the cities. For example, 11,000 people are living in tents near Miami, and preparations are being made for an additional 20,000 to 30,000 this winter-Renter's American Service.

COLORADO MINING ACCIDENT.

Boulder, Col., December 5. Heroic efforts are being made to rescue twenty men eatombed as a result of a fire at the entrance to the Fairview silver, gold and lead mine.
