This shows you how small and abbreviated a thing the skirt has become in Paris. The coat is of white leather embroidered in Nile green raffia, and the hat is of the same materiais. The coat is of heavy white silk with a brocaded satin pattern.
Some of the newest satin slip pers are embroidered on tho heal and across the back but quite
plain in the front.
Wide Lands of gold and silvor cloth trim evening gowns of velvet and chiffons of rainbow tinis.

WATCH YOUR CONVERSATION.
It has boon said that in these hurly burly days the true art of polite conversation has became: almost lost in obscurity, but for all the colloquialisms and slang. which predominate in our casual converso, the well-bred woman is known by her speech.
However carelessly she chat- tors, apart from the cultured tones of her voice, there is an un- conscious, but inheront good breeding in the turn of her words. From the nursery days you feel that she has been taught to pro-| nounce them distinctly and never allowed to use common phruvos,,
A reiterated "sho said and ho maid and I said," while recounting an incident, jars on one's good taste after a while, as also does the woman who, either through in-- attention or moro laziness, porsiste in addressing her friends as "Mrs.-er" or "Mr-or-or-," quite hoodless that more polite- new demands that their namos are properly articulated.
Talking "down" to those one might consider one's social in- feriors is another mistake. Abrupt- noss to shop assistants, the omission of thanks for survicos ronderod and trouble taken, and patronising remarks, spoil the' possibly otherwise faultless bo- haviour of any woman.
Don't fall into the very youthful· and inexperienced habit of bantor in conversation, unless with peo- ple with whom you are really intimate. Brilliant, but kindly wit is the only medium for badin- ago and repartes. Otherwise you may appear gauche and rude without the excuse of humour which might make it forgiveable,

Some types of the latest Autumn "modes.
Frequently the gold brocade or lace gown is lavishly oncrusted with beads, jewels or embroidery, to heighten its magnificance.
AN UNPOPULAR COLOUR.
Evory blonde is apt to think that she MUSL express her choicest foolings in blue. But no wise blonde will include too much of it in her colour scheme, because, unluokily, there is a ehag in blue. Although the heavenliest of hues, it isn't ifor a reason none can explain) a colour that "counts" a great deal.
Dress artists are striving to make it one of the" chief colours- for this autumn, which has driven

In other words, if you want ta hold your own in the ballroom, you won't do it in blue. It can't be done. Take any crowd at any dance, and you will note that the fadies in blue, howevor beautiful, are in the majority, and it is the minority colours that count.

The brightly coloured plumage of tiny birds is most sought after, arranged in little tufts or made up wings. Original flowers, are also to be seen, these too fashion- ed from clipped feathers.

LUXURIOUS TRIPLES.
There are marvellous littel onyx and crystal cigarette boxes and complexion holders. Nowa- days an accessory of this sort is i a bowildering design of precious stones on a jade, coral, or lapis-i lazuli box. Straggling sprays of little flowers arranged on golden stalks wander over a pinkshaded crystal box, while initials com- pleted with wide tans of diamonds form a more ordinary design. Any amount of knick- knacks joined to a jewelled handia| is the ideal of every smart wo- man, who collects a matching lipstick holder, stamp and match- box, and all are equally valuable.
THE WAVERING HEMLINE.
Nobody can say how the hem- line comes and goes this autumn, for thero is enough variation to please everybody. The most popular design gives the offect of an inverted flower.
It is with evening gowns that the most charming offects can be obtained. Diaphanous materials lay themselves open to any amount of fluting and potal offacts,
Uneven pointed hemlines, rich with sequin trimming and dia-| mante, are shown, also bows which are caught up in front or at the back in a houp of gathers, naturally taking the hemline up with thom. This effect is arrangod with godet panels, and is capoci ally; noticeable, on the PrinceNS frock.
Fluting resemblinga convolutod organ is a novelty. Scallops aro shown by nearly every couturier in his own special manner. Frooks entirely scalloped and head edged are fascinating when
A SMART COAT.
Here wood buttons, polished amt atuined, fasten the lower part of the coat and entirely ignore the upper part. Beaver fur, brick red suede velours and a lining of natural colour kashmir all go into the making of the couf.
LOVELY NEW FURS.
Furriers are treating the hair of animals with as much entor- prisc, skill and caro a hair Bressors treat the locks of their clients, and some really lovely new tonés, are the result. Inci- dentally, if a woman wishes her furs to reflect the glint of her hair she may have it so.
Golden mole is a truo henna shado; chestnut "seal musquash" has all the colour and warmth of the red-brown hair which used to be known by the same name. Goldon furs appear to be extromoly popular, and tho golden-hued molakin is likod par- ticularly well when it is used for acout that has a huge collar, cuffs and deep border of red fox.
Golden brown' beaver, silver scal, and gazelle fur with its almost startling strips and markings, are also favourites. Other furs aro shaded, smoked or spotted, not necessarily by nature, for art is doing as astonishing and as beautiful things as Nature dogs herself.

BEAUTY SECRETS OF FAMOUS BEAUTIES: 14.
BY RUTH ANDREA.
OF THE ZIEGFELD' FOLLIES,
There's nothing I admire more in women than levely, luxuriant eyelashes and eyebrows, and I have a theory that they are within the reach of everyone.
I have the tiniest little brush, such as is used for water colours which I dip into warm olive oil each night und go over my brows and lashes with it. Naturally I'm careful not to get the least bit of oil in my eyes as it would irritalethem,
"As regularly as I brush my hair, I brush my brown with an eyebrow brush so that they grow as they should and always look well kept This particular beauty stunt doesn't take five minutes a day, but it is five minutes well spent.
