During the prosorvation work on the 'Sphinx the tablet of Tholmes IV, recording an early axcavation of the Sphinx, was rovealed at tho baso of the monument while the sand was being removed. Our photograph shows the Stelo of Thotmos IV, which records the oxcavations of the Pharaoh (about B. C. 1466), and the repairs he made to the temple which exists between the paws of the Sphinx. According to the tablet, the god Harmachis appeared to Thotmes in a dream, promising life and dominion if he would dig his image, the Sphinx, out of the sand. ("Times" copyright photograph)."
