The inertia of the column of gas in the inlet system causes the gas to "lag" behind the downward travelling piston on the inlet stroke and to continue to flow in to the cylinder for a short time ufter the piston Has come to the end of the stroke. Similarly the burnt gases are at a pressure which may be as high as 60 pounds to the square inch at the conclusion of the explosion stroke, and it is clearly of advantage to give them as much time as pos sible to escape from the cylinder. The pressure above the piston is not exerting a very great lever- age on the crankshaft after the angle between the crank and connecting rod decrease many de- grees from a right anglo, i. e. after the piston has travelled about three quarters of its stroke. and it may be advisable to ar rango for the exhaust valvo to open at this point, allowing the

Over and above this ignition advance depending upon the setting of the magneto drive there is the further advance per- mitted by the ignition timing control lever already referred to. Use of this control will be dealt with later.

It is impossible to generalize about timing variations in articles of this nuture, as different en- gines employ very different timing settings, but a timing that might be found quite suitable for: an engine designed to give good pulling" on top gear and yet be capable of fairly high revolu- tions on lower ratios is as fol lows:-
Inlet opens 5 degrees lute Inlet closes 30 degrees late Exhaust opens 45 degrees early Exhaust closes 5 degrees late Ignition, when control lever in fully advanced position, 25 degrees advance. Makora of an engine always supply, full particulars of the timing in use on the engine and instructions for resetting cam-1 shaft or magneto drives should these be disturbed. The system of measuring timing advances by angular movement of the cranks, is more accurate and more con- venient than alternativo systems. As the timing of one cylinder correctly ensures automatically correct timing of the remainder it is easy for makers to mark the "setting points" for a given cylinder on the face of the engine flywheel.

The fittest survive!
The fittest survive! Neither men nor machines, if they are unfit, can loog withstand the crushing strain of an exacting existence.
Buick Valve-in-Head motor cars are built on principles that were established when the motor car industry started, and that these car's survived without change in their fundamentals is convincing proof that they are constructed on basic principles that are correct. In the making of Bulcks there has been no yearly shifting from one set of engineering and manufacturing principles to an entirely different set. The Buick Valve-in Head principle was right in the beginning, and it has been right ever since. Each passing year finds this great principle more firmly and securely established In the estimation of the motoring public.
The Valve-in-Head principle is the great reason for the survival of Bulex motor cars. If this principle had not been correct, Buick, too, would have found it necessary to jump from one kind of engine to another in a ceaseless effort to find something that would stand the grilling work a motor car is called upon to do. The Buick has survived every test that more than a million and a quarter users could devise in the most exacting conditions of worldwide service. There could be no better proof that Buick is the fittest among motor cars.
